Congolese adoption children arrive in Belgium after two-year wait

06:17 12/11/2015

The 11 Congolese adoptees who were detained by the director of their orphanage for more than two years have arrived in Belgium, announced foreign affairs minister Didier Reynders.

After more than two years of waiting, the Belgian adoptive parents this week received news that the Congolese authorities were preparing the children's departure for Belgium, writes Het Laatste Nieuws. The Belgian embassy in Kinshasa took the children into temporary care earlier this week, and all of the children have since been met by their adoptive parents in Belgium and are doing well, according to the Flemish Adoption Centre.

The procedure was delayed after the director of the orphanage refused to release the children, claiming that some of the Belgian families were behind on their payment. The adoptive parents have filed a complaint against the director.
