Brussels invites residents to decorate their homes in annual flower contest
For its 46th edition of Brussels in flowers, the City of Brussels is calling on residents to decorate their balconies, front gardens and façades with seasonal blooms, reports Bruzz.
Citizens have until 1 July to enter the annual competition, which offers a cash prize for the best floral display.
The aim of the competition is to bring more nature to the streets of Brussels and encourage people to spend time gardening rather than sitting behind their screens.
It’s also hoped that the additional flowers and foliage will make the city a more pleasant place to live, increase the bird, butterfly and bee population and have a positive impact on wildlife and air quality.
"With the annual competition, we invite the people of Brussels to brighten up our city with flowers," says Zoubida Jellab (Ecolo), the alderwoman for green spaces in the capital. "We are therefore calling for Brussels residents to leave their computer or their television for a rake, good topsoil and carefully selected flowers."
