Brussels makes Dutch-language libraries free with single membership card

Borrowing a book from a Dutch-language library in Brussels has just become easier - and completely free.

All Dutch libraries in the Belgian capital are free as of 5 September and residents can access any library in the network using one single membership card.

All late fees and due dates for books will also be equalised across libraries in the network, according to culture minister Ans Persoons (One.Brussels-forward), and a new house style is forthcoming.

The more efficient system is the result of a cooperation agreement between all 19 Brussels city councils, the board of directors of Muntpunt and the Flemish Community Commission.

“Cooperation in Brussels is not a mission impossible,” Persoons said.

“With the unified regional regulations, we prove that different Brussels authorities can join hands in the interest of transparent and easily accessible services for the people of Brussels.”

Library-goers will be able to borrow 15 materials from each library for a three-week term at no cost. Anyone returning materials late will pay a fee of €0.05 per day.
