A TUI Boeing 787-8 that took off from Brussels Airport on Sunday suffered a lightning strike and had to turn back, according to local media.

The information was first reported by Het Laatste Nieuws before being confirmed to Belga by TUI Belgium.

The TUI Belgium flight from Brussels Airport to the Egyptian resort of Hurghada was cut short after the plane was struck by lightning shortly after take-off. Passengers reported seeing a flash and hearing a loud bang, followed by the smell of smoke.

Although the aircraft was operational, it returned to the airport at Zaventem for safety checks following the incident. "We have an interest to carry out checks," said TUI Belgium spokesperson Piet Demeyere.

The travel company made overnight hotel arrangements for passengers before they embarked on a new flight to Hurghada on Monday.
