Construction starts on direct tram link to Brussels Airport
Work on the new tram line between Nato (Evere) and Brussels Airport is underway. The new line will ensure a 30-minute seamless connection between Brussels-North station and the airport in Zaventem, reports RTBF and Belga.
The construction work was officially launched in the presence of the Flemish minister of mobility and public works, Annick De Ridder (N-VA), and the chief executive of Brussels Airport, Arnaud Feist.
The first phase of the work is taking place primarily along the Da Vincilaan in Zaventem and consists mainly of roadworks and adaptations to the existing infrastructure.
These interventions are necessary for the subsequent installation of the tram tracks and stops.
This project is part of the broader Ring works programme, for which the Flemish government is investing in alternatives to cars, such as public transport and cycling infrastructure.
The goal is to reduce traffic congestion on the Brussels Ring motorway and encourage a shift to alternative forms of transport.
The construction of the airport tram will take place in different phases and is coordinated with other major infrastructure projects in the region, such as the renovation of the Ring and the airport interchange.
The new tram line is expected to be operational by 2031-2032 and aims to improve access to the airport and surrounding business areas.
