Twice as many Brussels residents as Walloons and Flemish want to move region

14:09 26/04/2025

Brussels residents are twice as likely to want to leave the region and settle elsewhere in Belgium than people living in Flanders and Wallonia, according to the latest Immoweb barometer.

One in five residents of the capital surveyed said they wanted to move to another province – twice as many as in Flanders and Wallonia (10%).

The main reason cited for wanting to move, regardless of from which region, is a desire for peace and quiet (28%).

The second most-common reason is the need for green space, followed by a desire for better proximity to work (26%), more affordable housing (18%), more space and, finally, proximity to family (15%).

Although Brussels residents are more likely to want to move elsewhere, residents of Flanders are most likely to actually do so. A quarter of Flemish respondents have already moved to another province. In Brussels, the figure is 19%, compared with only 14% of Walloons.

The study was conducted by YouGov for Immoweb between, based on a representative sample of 1,002 adults in Belgium.
