Belgian pilot from Flying Doctors crashes in Virunga Park
Belgian pilot Anthony Caere suffered severe but not life-threatening injuries after his plane crashed in the Congolese Virunga National Park, reports De Morgen. The 35-year-old Caere stars in the Belgian television programme Flying Doctors.
The accident took place on Thursday last week, immediately after takeoff from the village of Mutwanga. "We were barely in the air when there was a problem," says Caere, who has now been transferred to Ghent's Sint-Lucas Hospital. "It was immediately clear that we would crash. All I could do was try to avoid victims on the ground.”
Caere guided his plane away from the village and landed in a bunch of banana trees. The impact was huge. The plane has since been sent to the scrap heap.
