Belgian Symbolism to go on show in exhibition at Maison Hannon in Brussels
Art Nouveau masterpiece Maison Hannon is to host an exhibition on Belgian Symbolism, Echoes of Dreams, from 29 August to 19 April.
The show at the stunning Saint-Gilles museum invites the public to discover the enchanting world of Symbolist art at the turn of the 20th century.
Artists of the period sought to express a higher reality through form and their work was characterised by sensuality, mystery and irrationality, as well as a fascination for magic.
While presenting a broad reflection on aesthetic, philosophical, social and spiritual aspects of this pivotal moment in art history, it offers “a unique, sensitive, and intellectual exploration of the enchanting world of Belgian Symbolism,” according to organisers.
Some 80 works, including paintings, drawings, art objects, manuscripts, photographs and sound installations, are presented in five thematic rooms of the refined and elegant Maison Hannon.
“This body of work, as rich as it is rare, captures the full diversity of an artistic movement deeply rooted in its time, yet resolutely focused on the absolute,” add the organisers.
The exhibition showcases pieces by some iconic figures of Belgian and French Symbolism such as Victor Rousseau, Émile Gallé, Fernand Khnopff, Jean Delville, Jeanne de Tallenay, Charles van der Stappen, George Minne and Jef Lambeaux.
This selection of fin-de-siècle works highlights Brussels' central position as an artistic, spiritual and intellectual hub in the fervent period around 1900. Private salons in the capital proved to be driving forces in the highly influential avant-garde movement.
A programme of activities surrounding the exhibition includes talks, workshops and concerts, as well as a contemporary installation specially designed for the show.
