Belgium Cello Society presents recital by Karel Steylaerts on 7 December
The Belgium Cello Society stages a solo cello recital by Karel Steylaerts at ULB Solbosch in Brussels on 7 December.
The principal cellist of the Brussels Philharmonic is set to enthral the audience with his performance of the Bach solo cello suites.
Representing the pinnacle of the cello repertoire, they include Suite N° 2 BWV 1008, Suite N° 3 BWV 1009 and Suite N° 5 BWV 1011.
A prize winner of the 1990 Tenuto competition, Steylaerts founded the Pianofortetrio Florestan (later Tröndlin Pianoforte Trio) in the same year. The cellist made several recordings with the trio, playing on period instruments for the Viennese label Koch- Discover.
In 2006, he founded TrioFenix, a string trio that performs in national and international festivals. Their recordings for the label Fuga Libera are highly-praised.
Steylaerts has been principal cellist of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and the Beethoven Academie for many years, and since 2008 he holds the principal position at the Brussels Philharmonic. He plays a cello made by Lorenzo Ventapane in Naples in 1834.
The Belgium Cello Society (BCS), led by cellist and artistic director Han Bin Yoon, promotes and supports cello playing in Belgium.
The BCS is currently staging a series of autumn/winter recitals at ULB and Flagey. Tickets for the concert on 7 December are priced between €9 and €18.
