Code orange weather warning: Snowfall across Belgium, major traffic disruption

09:22 07/01/2026

The Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) has issued an orange alert for nearly the whole of Belgium on Wednesday due to snowfall and slippery conditions, reports RTBF.

Around 40 flights have been cancelled at Brussels National Airport in Zaventem because of the severe weather conditions that could cause further flight delays and traffic disruption.

The public is advised to limit their travel and stay at home if possible as snowfall is arriving from the coast and spreading across the country, from west to east, throughout Wednesday morning.

The first snowfalls arrived shortly after 7.00 in Wallonia Picardy, the Antwerp region and Brussels.

Public transport operators have warned that detours and cancellations are possible and that severe weather plans could be activated.
