Flagey pub De Valera's to reopen under new management
An iconic Irish pub in Brussels, De Valera’s, will reopen under new management after closing its doors at the start of the year, local sources have confirmed.
The pub, located near Place Flagey, closed at short notice on 1 January. The closure followed financial and operational pressures that have affected several bars and cafes in the area.
However, the venue now has a new owner ready to relaunch the business and restore what many residents considered a community fixture.
“It was definitely a shock for us, but I believe many of the people [employees] are going back,” a former employee told The Bulletin.
De Valera’s has been a familiar spot for both locals and visitors, known for its Irish-themed atmosphere, live music and social gatherings.
Its closure in early January drew reactions from local residents, some of whom noted the overall challenges facing venues in adapting to ever-changing economic conditions.
The new owner, Thomas Mertens - who runs several other Brussels cafes including the Leopold Café Presse at Arts-Loi and Chez Tom in Schaerbeek - has not yet disclosed a reopening date but is expected to retain most of the previous staff and preserve the pub’s character.
Catering real estate group Sorgeloose & Trice said some renovation works were needed before the pub can fully reopen.

Hope they will renovate or put new toilets in. The old ones were filthy.
