Grand Place and City Hall overused
Brussels’ Grand Place and City Hall, both of which belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, face irreparable damage if they continue to be used as extensively as they are now, report Le Soir and La Capitale.
Brussels Alderman for Urban Planning and Heritage Protection, Geoffroy Coomans has a plan ready to reduce the amount of wear and tear at both locations, including a relocation of City Hall’s administrative centre. The building, which dates from 1402, is currently used for municipal administration and many other purposes, such as meetings, weddings, and private receptions.
The city of Brussels has already passed regulation to limit the number of events on the Grand Place, making an exception only for the annual winter festivities, the traditional Ommegang procession and several concerts and celebrations of the Flemish community and Wallonia.
