Ixelles clamps down on night noise and drinking
Ixelles mayor Romain de Reusme has announced new measures to keep the peace in three popular drinking hotspots in the municipality: Place du Châtelain, Place du Luxembourg and Place Flagey.
There will notably be an alcohol ban at Place du Châtelain after 22.00, which will continue until 31 October, following many complaints to police – some 31 in March alone.
Stricter measures will also be enforced at Place du Luxembourg. Here too, noise will be reduced from 22.00. Cafes and brasseries will have to turn off the music, and any parties or events will not be able to continue after 1.00.
Ixelles will also monitor special events planned at Place Flagey and around the Ixelles ponds more closely, De Reusme said. “We get many requests for them, but if they have too much impact on public space, they will not be allowed.”
Geoffroy Kensier, alderman for public cleanliness (Objectif XL), added that the new rules will be accompanied by increased police checks and by a more rigorous cleanliness policy.
Under the new rules, street sweeping and the emptying of rubbish bins will take place continuously from 7.00 to 21.30, from Wednesday to Sunday. On the other days, cleaning and collections will still stop at 16.00.
During a test of the new timetable from 16.00 to 21.30 on Friday 21 March, Brussels Propreté collected almost 800kg of waste.
