Ixelles inaugurates revamped Place du Châtelain

09:26 11/02/2025

The municipality of Ixelles has inaugurated the redeveloped Place du Châtelain, after some 15 months’ work.

This means that the famous Wednesday afternoon Châtelain market, which attracts a lively crowd that socialises on the square until long after the stalls shut for business, can finally return to its rightful home.

“This emblematic square in Ixelles is first and foremost a place of life and meetings that belongs to everyone,” said Ixelles' new mayor, Romain De Reusme (PS).

Ixelles council decided to reconstruct the square in 2020, after Brussels water company Vivaqua said the sewage system needed to be renewed quickly. The new drainage system has been built to withstand storms for another 100 years.

The square has also been rearranged with innovative wooden seating, much more greenery and fewer car parking spaces. The renovation has cost around €4.6 million, a sum that includes a €1 million subsidy from Brussels Mobility.
