New Water Lantern festival to illuminate Bois de la Cambre in September

“Slow down, connect with others and enjoy a new experience!” is the message from the Water Lantern Festival, coming to Brussels’ Bois de la Cambre lake on 19 and 20 September.

Unlike a similar show staged at Groot-Bijgaarden castle in July, admission to the spectacle is free, although the lantern kits need to be purchased in advance.

The show starts each day at 16.30, when participants are greeted by live music and food stalls. If pre-ordered, you will also receive your lantern kit, including a marker pen and LED candle, so you can decorate and personalise your lantern “with a message, memory or wish”.

At sunset, the Water Lantern Festival team takes everyone to the water’s edge of the lake also famous for its boat rides to the well-known Chalet Robinson and brasserie.

Then, at around 19.30, comes the highlight of the evening – the en masse release of the lanterns, when “you become part of a collective experience of love, hope, and connection you'll never forget.” After every lantern has been set free, all that is left to do is sit back and enjoy the spectacle.

Musical entertainment is provided by local artists and an open mic will be available so anyone can join in. The food and drink area featuring several stalls and a wide variety of drinks includes gluten-free and vegan fare.

Festival organisers say that all that is needed to experience this mesmerising start to autumn is weather-suitable clothing, mosquito repellent and, if necessary, a blanket and/or folding chair for comfort.

And, as stated, everyone is welcome to take part in this magical moment of calm, connection and beauty.

Payment is only required for the lanterns – priced at €25.90 per person, €29.90 for the couples’ pack (including a picnic blanket), and €23.90 for a pack of four.
