One sinkhole closes, another opens

Shortly after workers finished repairing the Saint-Josse sinkhole days before Christmas, a new hole opened up at the intersection of Rue Léopold 1er and Rue de la Loyauté in Jette on Tuesday. While the latest fissure is only one-metre in size, it has necessitated a traffic deviation.

Water company Vivaqua is launching an investigation into the problem, which concerns the sewage network. Its workers are due to widen the hole to three square metres to study the sewage connections on Thursday. The site will then temporarily be filled before being opened again, probably at the beginning of January. After a detailed examination of the cause of the road damage, Vivaqua will conduct final repairs, reports BX1 news.

Rue Léopold 1er remains inaccessible to traffic at the Rue de la Loyauté intersection and bus lines 49 and 88 between Woeste and Breesch stops have been temporarily deviated.

The 36-square-metre Saint-Josse sinkhole, which occurred in September, provoked major road and rail disruption as well as the evacuation of local homes.
