State requests four-year sentence for STIB conductor’s killer

07:31 21/01/2014

State prosecutors yesterday requested that Alexandre Vanderlest be handed a four-year prison sentence for his 2012 fatal assault on 56-year-old STIB conductor Iliaz Tahiraj. The deadly incident stemmed from a confrontation following a traffic accident between a car and a STIB bus.

Vanderlest, 30, a passenger in the car, violently confronted Tahiraj, striking him with a blow to the head. The STIB employee died after his head struck the ground. The court’s judgment will be announced on February 10.

The state's request of four years took into account that, although the action to commit injury was intentional, there was no intent to kill. The prosecution argued that, although Vanderlest had been drinking and was in a state of shock following the accident, his actions were not justified. The defence lawyer, Laurent Kennes, defended his client by citing the extraordinary circumstances, which in most cases would not result in death.

The April 7, 2012 incident sparked shock and outrage among STIB workers, bringing Brussels’ transit network to a halt for days as transport unions lobbied for increased security.

Didn't plan to kill the STIB conductor? So what? He killed someone doing his job. Belgian Justice is a total JOKE. 4 years????

This is joke justice indeed... And the 4 years will be reduced on account of this and that. The killer is the victim. He was the victim of alcohol, of his lack of control on his actions, of the fact that this oldie of a bus driver was in his way at the wrong time, and that this wimp died just from falling after being hit. I do hope the whole of STIB will go on strike on that one. And I do wonder what would have happened if the driver was the one with the Belgian name and the killer was the one with the foreigner's name. So you can always hit violently when annoyed in a car crash, and the results will never really be serious - because there is some sort of an elegant explanation to get you out of trouble... ROAD RAGE IS OK, FOLKS !!!

I totally agree with these comments! It's outrageous - murder is murder! My sympathies are with the victim's family. Having lived in Belgium for forty years what passes for justice here never ceases to amaze me.
