Koekelberg basilica streets become two-way again

21:06 12/03/2018

Look both ways when you cross the road around Koekelberg basilica - a one-way traffic experiment introduced last year has been scrapped from today.

Road signs and markings were changed overnight. The municipality of Berchem-Sainte-Agathe is disappointed that the one-way scheme has been axed.

The pilot project was introduced at the request of the Stib, which hoped it would improve traffic flow. But the region's mobility minister Pascal Smet said it had caused more congestion than it had solved.

The return to the previous road configuration comes a few months before major roadworks are planned in the Leopold II tunnel running underneath the basilica and Parc Elisabeth.

Brussels' longest road tunnel will be closed on weekday nights for three years starting this May - and closed 24 hours a day throughout July and August.
