High expectations for new train museum in Schaerbeek

The new Brussels museum, Train World, is gathering steam for its grand opening on Friday at Schaerbeek Station. The museum highlights the history and evolution of railway technology in Belgium. Director Pieter Jonckers has high expectations for the museum, aiming to attract as many as 100,000 visitors each year, writes brusselnieuws.be.

The museum features more than 8,000 square metres filled with historic locomotives and railway paraphernalia, including an original bridge from the 19th century. Train World's main target groups are schools and families with children. Children will be invited to explore the museum at will, and even drive a train simulator.

The entire project - including the renovation of Schaerbeek Station, situated on Belgium's oldest railway line - cost about €25 million. The station's old ticket hall forms the entrance hall of the new museum, and its decor is the work of Brussels comic artist François Schuiten.

The museum's official opening on Thursday will be attended by King Philippe.
