One-man show ‘Pieces of a Man’ by David Labi in Brussels on 15 November
Londoner and Brussels resident, David Labi, takes to the stage for his extraordinary one-man show Pieces of a Man in Etterbeek on 15 November.
The performance relates the story of his late father Marcello, a Libyan-Italian Jew who survived the Holocaust after being imprisoned in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp as a child.
Marcello’s unresolved trauma fuelled a chaotic and colourful life that impacted heavily upon those closest to him, bringing equal doses of pain and joy to his family. A larger-than-life character, he embarked on boom and bust business deals, casinos and shady deals, a bomb attack, and more – hauling his loved ones along on his wild rollercoaster of a life.
The tragicomic show explores questions of identity, persecution, migration and ultimately liberty and the healing power of storytelling.
Labi performs a gripping and laugh-out-loud monologue, drawing on photos, video clips and humorous anecdotes to embellish his performance that has been hailed Belgium's top theatre critic Wouter Hillaert as “a masterclass".
