Savonneries Bruxelloises soap factory celebrates centenary with €1 million expansion and visit from the King

King Philippe of Belgium paid a visit to Savonneries Bruxelloises on Wednesday to inaugurate the Laeken company’s new factory warehouse.

Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, the firm founded in 1926 continues to manufacture its artisanal soaps in its original building, reports Bx1.

Since 2016, the firm has held the official title of Purveyor to the Royal Household — a distinction that, according to co-director Maxime de Villenfagne, has boosted its international growth, particularly in Asia.

During the visit, the King was briefed on the company’s history and manufacturing process that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques.

He spoke with staff members about the various stages, from the preparation of the soap base to the moulding and packaging of the finished products.

“We have always maintained a balance between artisanal craftsmanship and production modernisation," noted co-director Maxime Pecsteen, who took over the company in late 2019 with Maxime de Villenfagne.

Since their acquisition, production has doubled, which is why they purchased a 300m2 abandoned warehouse adjacent to the factory, part of a €1 million investment.

“The goal of this expansion is to increase production capacity and perhaps even double our operations in the long run,” noted Maxime Pecsteen.

Les Savonneries Bruxelloises currently exports to 27 countries, including Canada, Japan, China and the US. Exports account for approximately 80% of the company’s revenue.

“What makes us unique is that everything happens right here in Brussels — and always has — within these very buildings,” he added. Most of the 15 production workers live in the capital.

The company sells solid soap blocks, but also shampoo bars with a lower pH value. Products can be bought online via their website or city-centre shop in Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert.

In honour of the anniversary, Pecsteen and De Villenfagne have launched a special anniversary gift box with two soaps, perfumed with rose and tonka bean.
