Win tickets to Bruxellons musical comedy ‘Rebecca’ on 10 July
The popular Brussels festival showcasing some of the best francophone theatre in French-speaking Belgium returns with not one but two French-language musical comedies this summer.
For its 27th edition from 9 July to 27 September, Bruxellons! is once again staged in the lovely setting of Karreveld. The castle-farm and gardens in Molenbeek Saint-Jean date from the 13th century and provide a perfect backdrop for the theatre festival.
The two musicals are the highlights of an extensive and diverse programme. Rebecca (9 July to 30 August) is inspired by Daphne du Maurier’s romance Hitchcock’s film, while Good-bye Norma Jean (24 August to 23 September) delves into the life of Marilyn Monroe.
Since its world premiere in 2006, Rebecca has attracted over 2.7 million spectators in 14 countries and 11 languages. Bruxellons, which is well versed in the musical genre, proudly presents the world premiere in French at Karreveld.
Written by two of the most successful German-language musical theatre creators, Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay, the musical adaptation of the 1938 gothic novel similarly revolves around wealthy widower Maxim de Winter, his rather naive second wife known as ‘I’ and manipulative and foreboding housekeeper Mrs Danvers.
The latter resents the arrival of a new mistress at Manderlay, the family home on the Cornish coast in England. As ‘I’ discovers the hold that her predecessor Rebecca has over the household, a captivating thriller ensues. At the drama’s heart is the mysterious boating accident that claimed Rebecca’s life the previous year.
The Brussels production is staged by Jack Cooper and Marina Pangos, assisted by Mathilde Bourguet. An orchestra with 30 musicians is directed by Laure Campion.
In addition to the two musicals, the festival also proposes numerous theatrical re-runs, including the comedy Le Mystère du gant by Léonard Berthet-Rivière and En attendant Bojangles by Olivier Bourdeaut and Victoire Berger-Perrin. A magic show, cabaret, impro and an amateur theatre tournament complete the line-up.
